The Inland Revenue Department or simply Inland Revenue (Maori: Te Tari Taake) is the New Zealand government department responsible for the collection of taxes, payment of family assistance tax credits (See Working for Families), payment of Paid Parental Leave, collection and payment of child support and the collection of student loans and KiwiSaver. The Inland Revenue Department is part of the portfolio of the Minister of Revenue Hon Peter Dunne.
   As at 30 June 2006, Inland Revenue employs over 5,358 full time equivalent staff in 17 cities across New Zealand.

History

Inland Revenue started out as the Land Tax Department in 1878. The department was renamed the Land and Income Tax Department in 1892 with the central office set up in Wellington.
   It wasn't until 1952, when the organisation joined with the Stamp Duties Department, that the organisation came to be known as the Inland Revenue Department, or IRD.

    Distributed $839 million in family assistance » Distributed $101 million in paid parental leave


    Collected $1.8 billion of debt » Assessed $980 million as a result of audits


    Received 7.7 million returns and processed 7.7 million payments
